We took a cooking class in Ubud Bali and it was one of the best experiences we have ever had! Learning how to make traditional Balinese meals on an organic farm taught by locals..is there a better experience!

How to get to the cooking school in Ubud, Bali
We were picked up by Pemulan Bali Farm Cooking School at 4pm and were on the way out to the farm! Our driver was so much fun and we loved chatting to our group as we drove. By 5pm we arrived and were ready to go!
The organic farm tour at our Cooking Class, Ubud Bali
We met our guide for the evening and he began showing us the farm. An organic farm it is set in a lush area, there were countless patches of vegetables, fruit trees and spices. We learnt about each and the different properties and uses they have. It was a lovely experience walking through the farm while picking out foods for dinner ourselves.
The cooking experience
We donned our aprons and got to work. There was a row of gas stoves set up with all our utensils ready. All we had to do was listen, watch and recreate the steps shown by our teacher. Everything had been prepped for us so it was easy to get started. We were to make 3 main dishes including tempe and salad, Balinese Chicken Curry, Balinese lilete skewers and Balinese pancake.
Learning the cooking methods
After being shown each step we began the cooking stage by stage. It was so interesting getting a first hand instruction then review of our task. We managed to create each dish and our instructor was pleased with the results.
Our favourite dish was the tempe and salad, fresh and tasty we couldn’t get enough! The sweet curry and sate were delicious, even my mis-shapen pancakes got Mikes seal of approval!
The end of the class
Before long the cooking was done and we had finished our meal. Jumping back in the car we were driven back to town. This was not only a fun but culturally rich experience and I cherished taking part in it. We highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Ubud, you won’t regret it! The cooking classes are run morning, afternoon and evening by reservation. Book as early as there are only about 10 spots in each class, and you will be paired up to cook! We really enjoyed meeting the other guests and sharing a meal together at the end.
Pemulan Bali Farm Cooking School also run a very cool Village Firefly Night Tour with Dinner which looks awesome! We will definitely be doing this next time we visit Ubud.
