The Keep Eco Rooms – sustainable hotel in Salzburg

by Kelly

We are trying to seek out more sustainable options when travelling these days and we stumbled upon a truly unique and beautiful sustainable hostel in Salzburg, The Keep Eco Rooms.

The concept of The Keep

Firstly let me explain the concept behind the hostel. The owners are very interested in sustainability and every care has been taken to reuse or recycle all the materials and furniture used in the rooms. As their motto goes ”As little as possible, as much as necessary.” Unless necessary they have selected materials that were going to be disused by other new builds, materials that were already present and needed to be fixed and furniture that needed to be restored.

Keyless entry is simple and good for the environment by not requiring any wasteful cards, papers or cardboard. There is no reception on site. You will receive a 6-digit access code by email before your arrival. This applies to both the main entrance and your Eco Room. Simple and easy just the way it should be.

The Location

The Keep is located in the centre of the city of Salzburg. It is incredibly convenient, close to the train station and in a lovely area and short walk to Mirabell Palace with its beautiful gardens. Salzburg has some wonderful and historic attractions but there is so much more to this city. Just ask at The Keep and they will be happy to guide you on what to do and where to go. You can’t miss The Keep the gorgeous green painted walls and garden out front are eye catching and so suited to the environment.

The Rooms

Our room was styled in a beautifully rustic manner. The furniture was restored by a staff member from castles when they were no longer of use there. This adds a sense of charm and history to The Keep. The use of natural materials such as wood mixed with an industrial style is really eye catching. It is incredible to me that everything is sustainably sourced as it all looks like it would be right at home in an expensive hotel.

The bed is comfortable and there is a shower in the room and shared toilets just down the hall. All amenities are close at hand and you will want for nothing. The rooms are clean and maintained well. This is definitely a hostel that caters for all ages and travellers, we saw families, young and older travellers. Everyone greeted each other with a smile. We can’t help but think they felt the history and enjoyed the quirky décor as much as we did!

Amenities and activities

The Keep offers work spaces, a communal living room and kitchen are all available for use. Again the same rustic style runs through these rooms. They are warm, stylish and comforting against the cold that was outside when we visited. There are also yoga and herbal workshop available as well. There is a full restaurant in the front entrance which serves wonderful vegan and vegetarian food.

Sustainability first

It is inspiring to stay at The Keep. I was thrilled to choose a place that cared so much for the environment and their impact on it. Getting to witness first hand how they had carefully selected everything around them to lessen their impact on the environment has made me look around my home to see where I can reduce and reuse. Upcycling was done in such a beautiful way that really shows what is possible when we look to reuse. I loved reading all about the previous lives of the materials and furniture in the building, check it out here.

If you are looking for an excellent and unique stay in Salzburg, somewhere you can feel good about supporting then The Keep is for you. It is proud of its sustainability measures and you can be too!
