Why you should live your real life Disney fairy-tale in Fussen, Germany

by Kelly

Fussen a real life Disney fairy tale town! The town itself is unassuming at first arrival, the train station is like most those in Europe, but walking towards our accommodation the atmosphere changes with the scenery. Suddenly you have stepped in to your own Disney fairy tale town, where it feels as though Belle could come singing along the streets at any moment! Welcome to Fussen, the cutest little town we have ever been to and your very own real life fairy tale town!
This is why you should visit Füssen…

Beautiful buuildings in Fussen, real life Disney fairy tale town

The architecture of Fussen – a real life Disney fairy tale town

Buildings painted pretty pastel colours pop up before us. Paved streets twist and turn each promising an even sweeter view. I’ve stepped in to the fairy-tale town of my dreams!

Each store has an ornate iron sign, these signs have been there since medieval times and were used to indicate what the store was for as most people of the time couldn’t read. The buildings are painted pastel colours and create a sweet scene. It is easy to get lost wandering these streets, I was happily taking it all in feeling like Belle from Beauty and the Beast!

Cute cafes line the streets of Fussen, real life Disney fairy tale town

Cafes

Every second shop is a café or restaurant. The food is great and the cakes are delicious. In the cold, rainy early spring weather we experienced the warm and cosy atmosphere of the cafes. The perfect place to warm up, relax out of the weather and enjoy some good German food. There are a few good gluten free options also, this café has gluten free crepes and cake and Restaurant Ritterstuben is a great restaurant that does a good gluten free schnitzel! My favourite thing was the delicious gelato from Eiscafe Hohes Schloß cafe that even had a separately wrapped gluten free cone at no extra charge!

Hire an Ebike mountain bike

You can hire a mountain bike or ebike to discover Fussen and the surrounds. We saw people riding out to Neuschwanstein Castle and exploring the landscape.

Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle

This is probably the reason most people come to Füssen and it is really pretty. Honestly, I liked Füssen town itself more than Neuschwanstein Castle. The castle is touristy and while it’s worth seeing if you are there I would spend more time in the town, although it was a rainy and freezing cold day when we visited. It is just a short bus trip to Neuschwanstein Castle, you can read all about our day at Neuschwanstein Castle and everything you need to know to visit.

One of the many great beers Mike tried in Fussen, real life Disney fairy tale town

The beer

If you love beer there is a great little beer hall in the centre of town. Definitely drop in for a drink and say hi to the friendly locals. Just make sure to enjoy it before Sunday as it is closed and you will be as sad as Mike was when he discovered it was shut!

wandering the old Fussen Castle, in Fussen, real life Disney fairy tale town

Fussen Castle

I liked walking around the old castle even more than Neuschwanstein Castle.
It felt more traditional and part of the history of the town. Climb up the tower for views stretching across town, explore the terrace garden. Wander to the centre square of the castle has paintings on the walls that are in great condition. It is free to enter and look around and there is a paid exhibit inside.

The church and the Monastery

I know I have said that Fussen a real life Disney fairy tale town and the Church and monastery really add to this feeling. Amongst the beautiful buildings is a lovely monastery, you can walk around its courtyard and pay to go inside if you wish. There is also a beautiful pink church which I loved, going inside is free and it is a really serene experience. There are stunning paintings on the ceiling, it is a peaceful place to sit and absorb the moment.

Where to stay

Fussen is a real life Disney fairy tale town and was easy to get around. Our accommodation in town was spectacular also. We stayed at Hotel Sonne and highly recommend it. The hotel has a 1920s style décor, styled with cute and unique features everywhere.
We loved the sumptuous buffet breakfast in the morning and the extreme comfort of the room. We also relaxed in their oasis which is a must do!

Fuessen is a charming town that is very worthy of a visit and a couple of days in your itinerary. It is the perfect base to stay when visiting Neuschwanstein Castle and honestly I would recommend spending some time in the town to soak up all its lovely buildings and delicious foods.
