How to travel Mykonos on a budget

by Kelly

Is Mykonos expensive? Yes it is, but it doesn’t have to mean you can’t go there! These are all our tips on how to travel Mykonos on a budget.

When is the cheapest time to go to Mykonos?

The shoulder season will be the cheapest for Mykonos. This will be in May or September. June, July, August are really busy as they are the high season.

Where is the cheapest place to stay for Mykonos?

Stay less time and out of the centre – we stayed only two nights and for one of them we stayed outside of the main area near Psarou beach. This made it much cheaper.

The first night was in a little room in the Chora. We booked very last minute and it was really expensive for what it was. I don’t really recommend it. You’re best to book as early as possible especially in the high season of June -August. This is when it is busiest and prices are highest.

These are our picks of where to stay in Chora Mykonos:

Budget: Villa Varnali Small Boutique, La Maison Kalogera, Island Mykonos Suites, Sunset Paraportiani Rooms, Alana Mykonos,

Midrange: Yalos Hotel Sunset view Mykonos town private rooms, AK Mykonos,

Luxe: She Mykonos Boutique Hotel, The Lavish Apartment, Villa in Mykonos, Mykonos luxurious maisonette for 3 persons by MPS,

The second night we spent at Mykonos Azure. It is out of town and you would need a vehicle to reach it. We hired a scooter but it would have been easier with a car. We loved it here, it was really peaceful, the rooms were lovely and we could walk to the beach at Psarrou.

Book accommodation as early as possible! We booked one night months in advance and it was really well priced. We booked the other night the day before and the prices only climbed up until that point. Book as early as possible.

Find the cheapest facilities

Search for the cheapest facilities. If you are looking for a laundromat and have a car the cheapest one is out opposite Paradise Beach. There is a store/laundromat/bus stop there and the machines are good!

Is food expensive on Mykonos?

Eat from supermarkets or cheap gyros! – Greek food is delicious but there are cheaper places to try it. The restaurants in Mykonos are usually pretty expensive.

Our picks – We found delicious gyros in the centre of Mykonos Chora at Sakis. They were the perfect balance between being the most reasonably priced yet decent sized and of good quality. There was a great gluten free gyros (a rare find) at Pepper Souvlaki & more.

Mike also loved the gyros at SOUVLA which ios out near Psarrou beach.

We bought our other food from the supermarkets on the island. The best in the Chora is George Daktilidis Super Market. They have prices on their items, many markets in the Chora don’t have prices listed and it is too hard to go and ask every time you want to find out a price.

If you are staying out of Chora and have a vehicle we loved the supermarket called Flora Super Markets. They have the best range on the island and a DJ playing in the store!

We also went to AB Food Market, Evaggelistraki which was ok. The prices were pretty similar at both but the range was better at Flora.

Eating out on Mykonos

NEVER eat at a restaurant that doesn’t have pricing on the menu! – we wont even buy from a supermarket that doesn’t show pricing. This is honestly just a way for the owners to make up what ever price they want. As a rule, any restaurant that doesn’t show pricing on the menu is too expensive to eat in.

Free activities

Sightseeing is free – walking the town, taking photos, sitting and enjoying the views are all free. Lap this up as your memories rather than buying things in Mykonos. Souvenirs are cheaper in Naxos and Athens.

That is it! Hopefully you can plan a few days at Mykonos, it really is worth visiting and possible to do it without breaking the bank! Check out our Greek Island blogs for other must visit Greek Islands!
